The target value of blood pressure has changed

2019.05.01

New guidelines for the treatment of hypertension have been announced.
“High blood pressure treatment guidelines 2019” which Japan Hypertension Society established
was revised for the first time in five years.

What changed in this guideline is the target value of “Let’s lower it to this extent”.
Although the target blood pressure for general adults under 75 years old was conventionally
“less than 140 milliHg” in the highest blood pressure and “less than 90 mm Hg” in the lowest
blood pressure, the new guidelines for this case “, The diastolic blood pressure was reduced to”
less than 80 milliHg, “10 milliHg each.

Although the target blood pressure for those over 75 years old was “less than 90 mm Hg” as
usual for diastolic blood pressure, it was lowered from “less than 150 mm Hg” to “less than 140
mm Hg”.

What is the standard value of high blood pressure?

The reference value of high blood pressure is as follows, and there is no change.

Examination room blood pressure 140/90 milliHg or more
Home blood pressure 135/85 mmHg or more

The blood pressure measured in the doctor’s office is set a little higher because it is easier to
get a little higher than when measured at home.

The normal value became severe

Then, if it is “normal” if it is “less than 140/90 milliHg” in the examination room blood pressure, it
is not so. Under the new guidelines, “normal blood pressure” was “less than 120/80 mm Hg.”
And between normal blood pressure and high blood pressure “less than 120 to 129/80 milliHg”
is called “normal high blood pressure” and “130 to 139/85 to 89 mm” is called “high level blood
pressure”.

You may be worried that if the target value is lowered and the normal value is tightened, people
who have not been prescribed medicine will be prescribed medicine.
But that is not necessarily the case.
First of all, it is necessary to review lifestyle habits. And, as always, please consult with your
doctor and see if you need medical treatment.
