After 3 years, what is the risk of becoming diabetic?

2018.11.01

Diabetes is an illness that can lead to blindness, dialysis, gangrene of the foot, myocardial
infarction, cerebral infarction, etc., if it becomes severe.
According to the “National Health and Nutrition Survey” published by the Ministry of Health,
Labor and Welfare, “about 10 million people are strongly suspected to have diabetes, which
includes people with diabetes, and the people who cannot deny the possibility of diabetes,
which is the diabetes reserve group,” seems to be about 10 million people. Together, this
amounts to around 20 million people.
As the population of Japan is now about 120 million people, one in six people is diabetic or in a
diabetes reserve group. If you think about it, you can see that it is quite commonplace.
Those who have never been indicated as “diabetic” or as “doubtful for diabetes” in health
checkups or the like may think that this is not pertinent to them. But diabetes, a lifestyle disease
( if it is type 2 diabetes mellitus), if poor lifestyle habits continue, may develop in anyone.

Understand the risk of developing diabetes in 3 years
While diabetes has become commonplace to the extent that it is called a “modern disease” or
“national disease”, the National Center for Global Health and Medicine published an interesting
theory on their homepage.
When you enter basic data such as age, height, weight, blood pressure and so on, a “Diabetes
risk prediction tool” shows the “Risk of developing diabetes within 3 years”,”Comparison within
same gender and age,” and “advice”. This involves those who have never been diagnosed with
diabetes before age 30 to 59 years old.

This was jointly developed by the National Center for Global Health and Medicine and
Education Software Co., Ltd., using artificial intelligence (AI) based on the medical examination
results of 30,000 people at multiple facilities.
Since we only need 12 samples to see a risk prediction, we can see the results in just a few
minutes. Furthermore, if you also submit nine items of blood data, which are optional for
inclusion, a more accurate prediction can be obtained.

Comparison with previous health examination results
The result of the health examination may be noted only in an assessment rating such as “A”,
“B”, “C”, “D” Though if it is an “A” assessment, the consideration can be made, “Well, it’s okay if
it is rated “B” etc.
When I determined concretely, “How about comparing with average results for same age and
gender” and “How much risk will develop in the future” like this “diabetes risk prediction tool”, I
thought it was great. It’s better than average, a new understanding is obtained, and it may not
present a trigger for revising lifestyle habits.
Also, when looking at the medical examination results, it is important to compare it with your
own past data such as how it compares to last year’s figure, and how it compares to the figure
from five years ago.
