The meaning of the result “blood glucose level spike” from medical examination

2017.12.01

If you are an adult, I think that few people say “I have never measured my blood sugar level!” If you have a medical checkup, you should also have blood glucose levels among the blood test items.

  • Normal levels – less than 110 mg / dl (100 to 109 mg / dl is normal high value)
  • Borderline levels – 110 mg / dl or more, less than 126 mg / dl
  • Diabetes levels – 126 mg / dl or more

This is the standard of blood glucose levels.
However, this is the standard of “fasting blood glucose level”. At the time of medical examination, one is told “Do not eat anything after dinner,” and you are measured in an empty state. That is fasting blood sugar.
Actually, there are several kinds of blood sugar level besides fasting blood glucose.
Even if the fasting blood glucose level is normal, one cannot accept the result yet.

Even though you have low blood sugar upon fasting, there are also types of hyperglycemia that are covertly rising only after you eat. It is called “postprandial hyperglycemia”. Because it cannot be found in a general health examination, it is also called “hidden high blood sugar”.  In other words, every time a meal is repeatedly eaten every day, the blood glucose level rises and falls sharply for only a short time after a meal. When measuring the blood glucose level, it is called a “blood glucose level spike” because it makes a sharp, needle-like line that suddenly rises and goes down rapidly.

It is said that the blood glucose level should be stable at a lower level (of course, too low is not good either). “Lower” is important, “stable” is also important. Repeatedly going up and down over and over not only makes it easier for you to transition to diabetes, but also places a burden on the blood vessels, so it fs sometimes said that arteriosclerosis is progressing through the whole body unnoticed …. There are also research results that show the risk of death from cardiovascular disease is higher in postprandial hyperglycemia than in fasting hyperglycemia.
